COBAN & THE VERAPACES

The mountainous regions of Alta and Baja Verapaz are covered with lush forests, wild rivers and coffee plantations. The landscape is usually wet and foggy, the 'chipi chipi' is a frequent breeze and light rain.

Coban is the capital of Alta Verapaz, it is the main hub from which you will set out to see the region. The ruins of Semuc Champey are east of Coban. on the road to Lake Izabal.

In Baja verapaz are the fiesta towns of Rabinal, Salamá and Cubulco.

The history of the region is different from that of the Highlands. During the spanish conquest the verpaces were inhabited by the Achi. The Achi were a warlike tribe that the spanish could not defeat by arms. The church lead by Fray Bartolome de Las Casas, made a deal with Alvarado insuring five years of peace. In 1537, Bartolome and three other Franciscan monks entered the region and converted large numbers of indians to the church. After the five years the warrior Achi were transformed into spanish subjects.
