The costal area around Monterrico is a totally different Guatemala, and life here is imbued with sultry, tropical flavor that's more relaxed and inviting than anywhere else on the Pacific Slope. The architecture too, is different; wooden slat walls and thatched roofs prevail. Monterrico is probably the best spot in Guatemala for a weekend break at the beach. On weekdays it's relatively quiet, but on weekends and holidays, it teems with Guatemalan families. It's also becoming popular with foreigners.

Behind the beach, on the other side of the town, is an extensive network of mangroves swamps and canals, part of the 90km Canal de Chiquimulilla. Also in the area are a large wildlife reserve and a center of hatching and release of sea turtles and caimans.

At the Monterrico Nature Reserve there are ample opportunities to observe and to participate in many wildlife projects. The guides in Monterrico will be pleased to give you detailed information about the nature reserves. Guides offer motorboat and canoe tours through the Mangrove swamp filled with wildlife of all sorts. Early morning is the best. The municipalities of Monterrico are dedicated to the preservation and proliferation of endangered marine life and wildlife.

You are invited to participate in the repopulation of the Pacific Ridley and Leatherback turtles. The turtles lay their eggs from May to September. If you are a bird lover, the Palmilla Lagoon will be of special interest.
